To understand the language structure and get a deeper insight into its typological characteristics, knowledge about neighbouring languages is of major significance. Areal typology traced back to the 1920s is a relatively new linguistic remit. With recently increasing availability of empirical data, this linguistic field is gaining importance. The book presents an overview of problems in areal phonetics and provides an introduction to areal linguistics.
